Five Ways to Practice Self-Care in Charleston

| by Woodhouse Charleston, under Inspiration

In a city like Charleston, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Sometimes, though, it’s good to remember to slow down, check-in with ourselves, and take a little bit of time to practice self-care. Luckily, there’s no shortage of options of self-care in Charleston.

What is “Self-Care”?

It may seem like just a buzzword, but self-care can be an umbrella term for any activities or processes that allow you to connect more authentically with yourself, focus on what you need, and restore your balance. Essentially, it’s a treat yo’self moment, with an increased focus on wellness and growth!

Ways to Practice Self-Care in Charleston

1. Take a Break from Technology

First things first, log out of your email and put down your phone. It can be difficult to truly focus on yourself and relax if you’re being bombarded with requests from your boss or reminders of someone else’s curated feed. Disconnecting from social media will give your mind a break from the constant pressure to be the best and will allow you to truly be in the moment. Plus, by avoiding screens, you’re protecting your eyes from the harmful blue lights emitted by your devices, which can make it harder to fall asleep and get better rest.

2. Spend Time by the Water

We’re so lucky to be so close to water all the time in the Lowcountry. Charleston has tons of beautiful beach spots where you can sit and enjoy the calming sounds and sights of the sea. Watching the tide ebb and flow reminds us that no matter what’s going on in your personal life, the natural world continues to go on consistently. Try timing your breathing to the breaking of waves and witness as relaxation washes over you. Instead of starting your day immediately jumping into work, catch the sunrise over the ocean horizon and breathe in the morning salt air. You’ll immediately feel more at peace and ready to take on the day!

3. Squeeze in a Sweat Sesh

Exercise has SO many wonderful physical and mental benefits. Even just 30-60 minutes of exercise a day can boost your mood, give you more energy, and help you sleep better. In Charleston, you can choose from any one of the amazing local fitness studios. Sweat all your worries out with a spin class or a run along the beach. If you’re after something a bit more serene, try a yoga class or a meditation session at Still Soul Studio. Barre South is on the same street as our downtown Charleston spa location, and there’s another location near our Mount Pleasant Woodhouse Day Spa + Boutique, so it’s perfect to couple your exercise and your relaxation!

4. Try some Retail Therapy

There’s nothing selfish about self-care, and there are no rules about what is and isn’t self-care. Start at Woodhouse Day Spa + Boutique to browse our selection of luxury goods, including fluffy UGG robes, DermaFLASH facial treatment systems, Little Fish BOATEAK jewelry, and Yumi Kim pajamas. We also sell Maya Chia clean beauty and skincare products. Maya Chia is a locally owned brand, and we are the only spa in the world to offer a facial using these outstanding products! Then head downtown for a solo stroll along King Street with a coffee and do some window shopping or actual shopping at any one of the wonderful boutiques that Charleston is home to. Maybe you’ve had your eye on something for a while or are just looking for some design inspiration. There’s just something about looking at pretty things that can bring joy to the soul.

5. Treat Yourself to a Luxury Spa Day

Spas are the original self-care. Where else are you going to get pampered just for yourself? Woodhouse Day Spa + Boutique offers over 70 different services to get you totally relaxed and renewed. Stop in for a massage or book a full day with treatments from head to toe for a day of full rejuvenation. Between specialty loose-leaf teas, treatments with a focus on well-being, plush robes, and a tranquil environment, you’ll be sure to leave the spa feeling better in both your mind and body.
